Research in our group focuses on how bacteria acquire, sense, and regulate metal ions used as cofactors for biomolecular activity. Biophysical characterisation of the metal and DNA-binding properties of metalloregulatory proteins has led to the production of a series of metalation calculators to predict cytosolic, with applications in industrial biotechnology. We are particularly interested in identifying the complete set of molecules that contribute to metal homeostasis for both physiological and non-physiological metals. This work will enable engineering of bacteria with altered metal availability to improve the efficiency of metalation of heterologously expressed enzymes (WP3) and to increase metal tolerance in biorecovery applications (WP2).
