About

Dr Jinxin Xie is a Postdoctoral Research Associate in Prof. Jon Lloyd’s group at the University of Manchester. His research is supported by the UKRI ELEMENTAL Engineering Biology Mission Hub and contributes to Work Package 2 (WP2), focusing on the microbial biorecovery and bioreduction of critical metals using Shewanella oneidensis. Dr Xie’s work investigates the microbial reduction of valuable metals, the biosynthesis of high-value nanoparticles, and the biotransformation of Fe minerals. Within the ELEMENTAL project, he is working with other WP colleagues to test engineered strains with enhanced capabilities for targeted metal recovery and nanoparticle formation, particularly for gold and rare earth elements. These biogenic products are being characterised using advanced imaging and spectroscopy techniques, with the aim of applying them in areas such as catalysis and sustainable metal processing.

Key areas of expertise:

  • bioreduction
  • biorecovery
  • mineral biotransformation
  • nanoparticle biosynthesis
