My role within ELEMENTAL is to identify genes in bacteria that may enhance the recovery of metals from the environment. To do this I am using a technique called TraDIS-Xpress whereby we create large mutant libraries that can be exposed to various stresses such as metal susceptibility. Working with other collaborators across the Hub I am helping to create mutant libraries in various bacteria that are amenable to bioremediation such as Shewanella oneidensis and Geobacter sulfurreducens and other extremophiles. Understanding what genes are essential in bioremediation can help identify targets to be used in sequestering metals.
