About

Brenda is an Associate Professor of Sustainable Bioprocess Design at the Department of Biochemical Engineering, UCL. A Biochemical Engineer by training, she is interested in the scale-up and translational research of bioremediation. Brenda’s work is highly interdisciplinary in nature, and she is the co-founder of the Bio-Integrated Design programme at UCL. Her teaching and research work blends aspects of environmental biotechnology, advanced manufacturing and computational design for applications within the built environment.  Brenda’s group develops bioremediation processes using algal-bacteria consortia as well as robotic extrusion for large scale 3D printing of immobilisation matrices which will directly feed into ELEMENTAL’s activities in WP6 where we aim to create sustainable platforms for heavy metal recovery.

Key areas of expertise:

  • Biochemical engineering and bioprocess design for heavy metal recovery
  • Cell immobilisation and custom bioreactor design for consortia-based approaches
  • Sustainability evaluation and Life Cycle Assessment
