Elemental Hub Year 1 Meeting

ELEMENTAL Hub Hosts Inaugural Annual Meeting in Manchester

The BBSRC-funded ELEMENTAL Engineering Biology Mission Hub held its first annual meeting on 15–16 January 2025 in Manchester, bringing together researchers, collaborators, and stakeholders to share progress and shape future directions.

The ELEMENTAL Hub is dedicated to developing innovative bioengineering solutions to enable a sustainable, circular economy- specifically through the recovery and processing of metals from diverse sources and waste streams. Over the two-day event, Postdoctoral Research Associates (PDRAs) and Co-Investigators presented updates across the Hub’s six research themes: Bioleaching, Biorecovery, Bioprocessing & Industrial Biotechnology, Biosensing, Bioremediation, and the Circular Economy of Metals.

Attendees also included members of the Strategic Advisory Board and the BBSRC’s Senior Portfolio Manager for Engineering Biology. Together, the group discussed key challenges in scaling up biological solutions and translating academic research into real-world commercial applications, central aims of the Engineering Biology Mission Hubs programme.

Regular research updates and insights from across the Hub will be shared via the ELEMENTAL Research Blog, providing ongoing visibility into the Hub’s activities and discoveries.
